On the 30th of April I had a brilliant view of Jupiter next to the waining but near full moon and two of Jupiter's moons too (not sure which ones).it's views like this that make you realise that astronomy isn't just about science but the inner life too.

    Kevan -

This will take you to a neat little software-program that shows where the Moons of Jupiter are, as well as the Great Red Spot.

    Free - of course!

    Enjoy!

Astronomy can be about art too! For me it's a relaxing way of doing art, sketches, relaxing contempling.. not much about calculations and heavy stuff.

No Mak - two cans and a string. But I like it!

It works. It doesn't need a lot of computer resources. And I like it.

    Bite me!

Call me old fashioned but I photocopy the map of Jupiter's moons from an astronomy magazine and use that with a red light. Mind all 4 look the same. I shall be trying for Titan soon once Saturn comes up at a reasonable hour, mind now the old Celtic festival of Beltane has gone(1st may)our nights are shrinking. As the Russias of Petrograd/Leningrad/St Petersburg called them Leningrad white nights and here's a fact,Leningrad is the most northern city on earth with a population of over 1 million. Guessing Auckland,New Zealand, the most southern? Auckland is just over a million, just.

Leningrad, of course, has resorted to it's former name of St. Petersburg.

I'm guessing it runs well on something like this.

Why are you obsessing on this piece of software? If you have something easier and simpler - link it.

I'd worry about compatibility with software that hasn't been updated for several years. It's older than Win 7 and wasn't coded for its architecture. Let alone anything newer.

Petrograd was its name in 1917.it's about 60 degrees north and therefore around June the 20th it doesn't get dark.

It'll roll around, Kevan! Right after Moscow, DC...

Mak - it runs fine on every OS I've run it on in Windows - but never tried it on '10' and never will. It's a simple math-program after all. It's not translating the Gutenberg Bible into Sumerian.

It's just that these sometimes leave crap in the registry on Windows and can occasionally be problematical. Have you ever ran a portable off a directory on your C-Drive/Local Disk C?

    dir1.jpg

I run Fotografix and Maxthon as portables on my hard drive. That way they are totally isolated from the registry and can be uninstalled by merely deleting the directory folder 'Maxthon Portable' I made here.

    dir2.jpg

Download the portable into a folder, use 7-Zip to unpack it to the folder. Find the 'Bin' folder and open it. You can launch the program from here, or right click and make a desktop shortcut.

The Palemoon shortcut here is a conventional install, Maxthon is literally run from a directory folder.

No crap in my registry. Only common remnant is from my weekly (or there abouts) Stellarium 'beta' I snag and check out the latest additions. An acquired taste (Ack! There goes those damned new F35 jet-fighters' playing war-games over my rooftop again!).

I tried Maxthon and didn't care for it. I got it from your suggestion. So mostly I use Firefox. For sites that need Java & Flash, I run Pale Moon. That's generally only then I go and catch up with gang of mean little old ladies on a gaming-site (no real money changes hands). I enjoy this hobby of mine - and a few of them are interested in astronomy and other sciences and use me for the latest goings-on. I got four of them up and out the door to spot the Moon & Jupiter close to one another. I was socked-in under the clouds, but enjoyed their 'Ooh! Ahs!' vicariously. And that website (Pogo), which is also available in the UK and Europa, tells it's users to use IE 11 for best results. And specifically not to use Firefox. But I use Pale Moon there. And everyone else is constantly crashing & freezing & kicking their members out. I get a BIG WARNING!! when I enter due to it's detecting the Firefox code of Pale Moon. And no crashes, freezes, etc. I told them about it and offered a link - but they're to intimidated to install and run it.

So I remain a fan of the Pale Moon browser! I'm also helping a woman in getting a telescope and I'm tutoring her in astronomy at her own pace. She's going for a 127mm F/15 Maksutov, and despite my suggestions she get a goto-mount, she's scared of them. Oh - I was approached by the friends of an elderly woman whose husband had just died unexpectedly of cancer. 2 weeks from diagnosis and passing. The woman was talking of suicide, and could I help her?

She's alive and well happy to be free now several years now gone by. She's from Yorkshire and named Jan. She may be dropping in here to find me, so if a 'Jan' joins and asks where I'm to be found - that'll be her!

Pale Moon Good. Internet Explorer BAD! Ugh! Ook!

There's crap in everybody's registry Dave. Most apps leave registry hooks even after uninstallation and it is hard work hunting them down. I used Maxthon for years but it started to turn towards the dark side. I was dubious when they removed the ability to block third party cookies, then furious when they now have a pop-up informing me it isn't my default even when I'm not running it at the time. I like some of its inbuilt functions so I run it off a directory. Maxthon are becoming like mendacious Mozilla now and I don't trust either of them. Vivaldi is my default on Windows now, it was started by Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner. I've run Vivaldi for three years, on Linux first, then Windows.

Well I run two scans for any garbage - CCleaner and lolo. As well as my usual MalwareBytes and Kaspersky. Haven't had anything show-up in ages. The times have changed. I was always finding 'nasties' just a few years ago.
