So after supper, I step out to the road to find Cassiopeia, and resume star hopping. Silent as the grave a big coyote slips up the road just fifty feet from me. I stomped and yelled. But then he stopped and looked at me. I grabbed the .38 snub and he broke for the tree line. Very bold for a yotey. Too bold. He scared me when he stopped so close and staired me down. If it's clear tomorrow, I'll resume with the AR-15 on the tailgate instead of snubby.

It may have been a Mama Coyote. Mama's will act in uncharacteristic ways if they percieve someone being a potential threat to their young. I've had a Red Fox do that to me before. I just spoke to her gently and walked away slowly - backwards.

The next day I saw her again - and with 3 Kits in tow. She took the tribe up to the local pond for some Duck-Dinners. I often saw her Duck hunting up there. She made a new home for herself and family on my woodland hill. After being forced off her ancestral land by a shady contractor illegally (backroom deals with the town-meeting crooks') building McMansions on what was protected conservation-land. Those are the one's I'd be inclined to use your AR-15 on - or my .308 Isreali Galil!

I was looking for you. Found a new article about recent findings in your name-sake up there - The Pleiades - in Sky&Telescope online, which I subscribe to. Here's a Pdf. for you (and anyone else):

    See ya round the Star-Dome,

Large male actually. He wasn't hunting, he should have been afraid, but he wasn't. Too much livestock in that field for a big cocky coyote to be hanging around. I need a donkey. They stamp yotes flat.
