I was observing the coat hanger cluster in vulpecula a few nights back.its generally referred to as an asterism but some reports say some, not all or even most,of the stars may form a genuine cluster. I've occasionally just managed to spy it with the naked eye as a fussy patch.

Hi, Kevan. I've spied the coat hanger a few times myself. I love the way it looks through my reflector. That entire stretch of sky is like one big open star cluster! In fact, when the sky clears from one of these daily summer evening downpours in the South, I'm going out to hang my views on the little cluster :)

    Regards,
    Reggie

I usually observe this one with 10X50 binoculars. I think I like it best in binos. And it is one of my favorites to show newbies who are just getting started.

    Naked Eye
    Summer Triangle
    Northern Cross

    Binocualars (typically 10X50)
Vega as a starting point - confirmed by Epsilon Lyrae next to it (Double Double)
Identify Albiero as part of Northern Cross
The Coat Hanger ( 2 views right and one down from Albiero)

    Small scope
    Split Double Star Albiero

These are things they can find with the naked eye. Splitting needs a scope. Coat Hanger needs the binos.

The Coathanger, aka Brocchi's Cluster, or Collinder 399, is a beautiful object. It is, as far as I know, an asterism. But there is a small open cluster, NGC 6802, just next to the Coathanger.
