I started working on making a Cross-Staff. I would not call what I have done so far even a prototype. It's kind of a testbed. There is a description of a Cross-Staff with some information on how to make one and use it in the book Mathematical Astronomy for Amateurs by E.A.Beet. You will find it on page 125.
Is this One giant step backwards? I don't think so. Not for me anyway and probably not for others learning how to do things and how they were done. I did not understand some of the math in the book so I went with using a protractor and thread for marking my measurements.
I have tested what I made so far outside at night here and it failed miserably because of the constantly varying light pollution. I plan to try some either glow in the dark or reflective tape on it.
Have any of you made and/or used a Cross-Staff?

Here are a few photos of my incomplete testbed. If I pursue making it there will be changes. I included the protractor, thread, some of the blue tack, and button in the photo. I also used a straight pin and small piece of duck tape.
