This morning at 4:00 AM, I was out in the upper field. In and out of the old barn, with a bright 600-watt high-pressure sodium light. aka Star Killer. But, this morning it popped with an ugly sound. I pulled my headlamp out of the console of my GMC and kept on working. After all, twilight is just an hour away. In just a short bit, my eyes begin to adjust, as I had the headlamp on the green setting. and low. First, it was Betelgeuse and Aldebaran, that caught my attention. My eyes continued to adjust as I enjoyed the Hyades and Pleiades with my bare eyes. No scope, no binos. Just the jewels of the sky and the smell of drying hay. I sat there till the twilight crept in and I went into the house for some coffee. It's an awesome thing to just stop and look up for a few minutes.

I love this time of year. Early in the AM I get a sneak preview of some of my favorite night sky objects. Then again, I think I say that with the change of every season. Clear skies Yall.

We bought a house last year. One of the factors in making the decision to buy was the relatively dark skies! There is a Church right across the street, but the outside lighting was minimal. Perfect! That is until about a week after we moved in the local Power truck arrived at the Church and replaced the bulbs in two LARGE floodlights that illuminate the parking lot. One of them pointed almost horizontally toward my house. That night I was horrified to see the results - ruined dark skies, except for behind a large garage. There it was acceptable, but I was livid over the change.

There is a bright ending, er.. I mean a dark ending to the story! After speaking with the Pastor, I was able to get the power company to reposition the horizontally pointing light away from my house somewhat. It's still not what I had hoped for, but I still have my little square spot of heaven behind the garage.

    Hey Squeege:

How'd you make out with Florence? I hope you managed to escape unscathed? Friend's & Family too, me hopes! And your astronomy-gear - goes without saying! :p

    Take Care!

we were forcasted to get 10 -16" of rain in the mountains where i live. Florence went a little south, and we ended up with maybe 5" rain for 2 days.. not bad at all! . wind wasn't an issue either. Thanks for asking.

Well, that stinks. You have the garage anyway. Sorry to hear that.

Yes, the glass was half empty for over a month, then I began looking at again as half full!
