I'm just curious. How many people here have a cat?

When astronomy first started for me, a solid black cat appeared one night. walking back and forth between my two legs and the scope. A jet black cat, invisible in the night, except for her two eyes, which glow a demonic red, from the red light in my headlamp. Daylight came and her eyes were actually an emerald green. She seemed a good cat, so off to the vet, and she is now my cat. Congrats the vet tells me, she is with kittens. I now have 4 cats.

But I've noticed that astronomy folks seem to be cat folks.

I've raised many Cats <note CAPS> ever since I was a kid. 1968 to be exact. I don't have one now, which I regret, due to my location. Now that I know you're a Cat-lover, I'll be sending you some Cat-Tales that'll truly blow your mind!

    You are NOT alone!

Félicette was the first cat in space. I kind of like the idea of firing cats into outer space.

Although ... there are a lot of large hungry owls where I live.

Sad for the cat, but it's just nature. In the right place at the wrong time and humans arn't the top of the food chain.

hahaha Mak the night, good shot with the Owl. I have serious doubt this was a successful lift off with a cat in the claws. Unlike a rabbit, the cat can turn around and inflict massive damages to the bird.

I would expect the encounter like that to remain a fight on the ground ending up with a tie.

We never know but I would bet money on the cat probably.

    ====================

Nice Pleiades you have cats now, I am a big fan of them of course. I found mine has a baby abandoned in the field in front of my home... has well has a domestic rabbit another time.

So many people abandoning the pets like that. Once I saw a box full of kittens at the common mailbox.

Congratulations anyway, you can send a picture of that cat if you want (except for @Mak the Night :D, a known cat hater :p)

Cats aren't at the top of the food chain when they crap on my lawns.

I wouldn't say that I hate cats. I do hate them shitting on my lawns though. Cats have to realise that there are consequences. I also hate the fact that I've had to spend nearly 200 quid on deterrents: lion dung pellets, anti-cat pellets, motion sensitive ultrasonic emitters, cut out metal cats and a big pokey stick. OK, I already owned the big pokey stick. That 200 quid could have gone towards a really nice eyepiece! lol

If these are legal in your neck of the weeks, they are a great deterrent round that wont really harm the cat outside of a little pain. It's #12 shot in a .22LR. It has worked for me to keep away warring toms.

I doubt they're legal in the UK, they do look effective though. Oddly, I could get a shotgun licence fairly easily here. Although that's probably overkill. The ultrasonic emitters do the trick. I held one up to my ear once thinking that as I'm not a cat it wouldn't affect me. For a brief moment it was like being stabbed in the brain, going directly through my ear, with a chopstick. No wonder the cats run off when they light up.

This is Mars, he has been my viewing assistant for almost 15 years now.
He keeps his eyes open for rodents and zombies so I can enjoy viewing :)
