Nice to participate in the launch of a new online community. I've been enjoying Astronomy as a hobby since 1970 when I bought a dreaded department store telescope which I still own and don't have the heart to part with. I consider myself a very experienced beginner and enjoy observational astronomy, planetary and deep sky. I'm also an astronomer on a budget and have spent my time in the hobby trying to get the most out of economy-grade equipment.

Welcome Alan. I have been down that very same budget road myself. In fact, Often times I find myself still there. Nothing wrong with that. It actually makes you a better observer.

Welcome @alanoodle! You should definitely share any tips you have on getting the most out of your economy-grade equipment. I am certain many would love to hear about that if you are willing to share.

Glad to be here and great to meet everybody.

I think a big factor in enjoying the equipment I have is not having unrealistic expectations. I've looked through other people's high-end equipment and the views are amazing and far better than anything I could get from my scopes. But when I go out on the deck and look at the Double Cluster or the Leo Trio with my Orion 8-inch Newt or Saturn or Albireo with my 5-inch Mak, it always knocks my socks off. (I gotta get better socks!) I never get tired of it and I'm rarely disappointed.

And, Dan, thanks for the comment about the website. I need more hobbies!
