    I wonder what you think, I tend to be negative a bit with the complexity of this project, the JWST has with many moving parts.

    It's a wonder of engineering but there are too many weird mechanics on it. like the deployment of many mirrors and the shield sheets at the base especially. It looks very hazardous.

    With no means to service it, billions could be wasted in a matter of minutes.

    --> I have difficulties believing it's going to work ...

    Considering what else the government could be spending the money on, I'd hope it works and they can get it parked successfully into a stable orbit. And they make sure the mirror's are complete & perfect. Remember what happed with the Hubble ST? They'd launched it with a defective mirror - which required sending a repair-team up to fix it.

    I do, however, flashback on the physicist I knew in Lincoln, Massachusetts who got a visit by uniformed military-agents from the government. They wondered about launching what was, in effect, a giant magnifying-glass into orbit that could be remotely aimed anywhere desired. "What do you want this thing for?" "For generating power, of course!"

    He then gave them a ton of technical double-speak alla Orwell to tell these characters why it wouldn't work (he was lying). There was NO WAY he wanted to help the military be able to play "Ant's-On-The-Sidewalk."

    Yep I remember Hubble, the good news was that it received a few services and that's awesome. I hope the US will be able to have a space work platform like the old shuttle maybe with the help of the DreamChaser or their X-37 (if they are big enough?). You know to have a decent space ship that can move around with agility, with an tool box an perhaps a robotic arm to perform various operations with the astronauts, that would be great. The shuttle was great. (;

    They could fly around to do space missions and fit large component inside the bay.

    But we don't know what the US governments is up to has I sad before on SGL, we know nothing about what they are really doing. Your friend was probably right not to cooperate who knows ?
