    Hi All,

I was wondering if there was a particular reason why so many people on astronomy forums in general seem to prefer ongoing very long multi page threads instead of starting new threads?

I noticed this is pretty prevalent on sites like CloudyNights. Is there a particular reason for this? Is this a habit from past limitations of forum software and search?

Are there things that we can do to help with organizing information? Should we better enforce off topic situations?

    Let me know your thoughts.

    -George

I can't really say if this is so. Perhaps it's like a comfortable pair of jeans or a shirt. A sense of familiarity? If a new piece of information becomes available to me, I have no problem with creating a new, and appropriately titled, thread for such. Others may feel it can be interrelated with an existing thread and toss it in.

I can live with either way. I think the old addage "There's no accounting for taste" comes into play. Nitpicking other people's perceptions can be a recipe for trouble.

Sorry if someone disagrees, but that's all good, too.

I'm indifferent either way personally. Sometimes it's useful to see how thought processes have progressed over a particular time period and other times it can be draining to go through 40 page thread trying to find information/answer that I was looking for.

I just wanted to know if there was a technical reason and that maybe that is something we could try to solve.

It's an interesting dilemma. I suppose it depends on the individual topic and how encompassing it can be.

To me if the information is pertinent to the original discussion then continue the thread.
If not then start another thread and just link back to the other if you want to reference something specific.

It's become a legend, George. That'll put us in someone's odd & esoteric book of 'Strange Computer Tales.'

Ray started the thread on another forum, but we had to move it here. It may outlive us all! Lol
