When I first moved to the jungle 10 years ago, the skies were dark and I had few neighbors. Now, I have more neighbors and they love their outdoor lighting! The sky is still dark (luckily, their lights are not directed upwards), but the glare is very annoying. I found a great solution here. It's called a "Sport-Brella" and is designed specifically for fun in the sun (UPF50 and all that nonsense). Indeed, it is so portable and easy to set-up that I always bring it to the beach with me when I want to look at the ocean, drink rhum and listen to Harry Belafonte CDs. But I digress. This thing makes a great half-dome observatory! Does a great job of filtering out annoying lights. I paid the equivalent of $80 for it. Great investment. I think that these are available at Wal-Mart or Costco (are there still WalMarts and Costcos in the US?). Anyway, check it out!

Thats an awesome setup, especially the impromptu pub :) Don't worry I'm sure your not missing much living in the jungle, and there are probably even more Walmarts and Costcos since you left.

I love it! Wonderful find and modifications. Maybe add a C-Stand or something similar to the mix. The weight of the c-stand may help keep everything keep still if it gets a little windy, but probably wouldn't stop it from flying away. I think you can find some decent c-stands online for around $120-150.

If it's that windy, I will stay inside and drink beers. I can buy a lot of beers here for $150. 313 bottles of San Miguel to be exact.

Add me to the list of those who think that's very cool! I can use something like that when I observe in my back yard.

It really does help a lot. I contacted the manufacturer about making modifications and marketing that as an Astro-Brella. Never heard back from them. Of course, I will not be too surprised if Agena offers an Astro-Brella in the not-too-distant future!:D

See? The sky is clear and now I can study the Helix Nebula and Sculptor Galaxy without interference from annoying neighborhood light. Well, except for my flash. Now I have to take some time to let my eyes dark adapt again. That's where the beers come in.
