The astronomical society of Oman has erected a sign in Al amarat,a town just south of Muscat pointing out where the tropic of cancer crosses the Earth's surface.today I got a bus there, the Muscat area has a very good bus service with signs in Arabic and English so no need to be fleeced by the taxi men!,and walked across the tropic! although I suppose the tropic moves depending on the planets wobble either side by up to 30km(or was it miles?)based on the pull of the moon, sun and to a much lesser extent Mars, venus and Jupiter,I think Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are too far to have any influence.thats the first of the latitudal lines I've crossed on foot.artic circle by rail, tropic of cancer by air,bus and foot, equator by air, tropic of Capricorn by air, Antarctic circle......pending!I don't count longitudal lines as they where just designed for human navigation and the Greenwich meridian is the only named one(foot, rail, air, bus, rail, ferry).

You just helped me learn about the tropic of cancer :)
I crossed the artic circle when I was in the navy. I'm a blue nose.

Never done any of the Earth's circles by boat.with the Antarctic circle boat seems the only way.you could do the artic circle by ferry too,the Norwegians have a ferry, the huitigruen (probably spelt wrongly!), which goes from Bergen to Hammerfest taking 7 days.in winter it is popular with those wishing to see the northern lights.

I actually did it in the winter time. We were the first aircraft carrier to cross the artic circle in winter and have flight ops. We all got an expeditionary ribbon and a large poster for becoming blue noses. They stopped doing the traditional blue nose ceremony because of its danger. I did not see the northern lights then. I just remember it being cloudy and snowing.
