Friday night, my son, our friend, and I went fishing on Lake Arrowhead and when the bite slowed, I began pointing out various asterisms, etc. Near Cassiopeia, we spotted a bright flash with a period of about nine seconds. There were no other lights (nav or otherwise) and it was moving much slower than an airplane anyway. After about 90 seconds, the flash stopped.

We moved the boat and they began searching Cassiopeia again and the flash was back- but now with about a four second period. Again, it stopped and we moved once more. The bite slowed and we three were staring at Cassiopeia hoping to again spot what we took for a satellite.
A dim star brightened suddenly to about twice the magnitude of Sirius and then disappeared completely! I've never seen the like in over 60 years of star gazing and have no idea what it was that stunned us that night. I'm sure one of you have a simple explanation that I can pass on to my fishing buds?

A line of the same type of satellites. There are several satellite-groups up there that orbit in formations - usually straight-lines - and are known to produce such phenomena. Download Previsat (an excellent & free satellite-tracking software-program), if you haven't already - Heaven's Above works, but Previsat is ready when you are - and consult it.

If you don't have Previsat, you can in a few minutes:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/previsat/

It's a download from SourceForge, same bunch who Stellarium trusts to use, and is bug-free and won't try to slip in any unwanted programs. Or my personal most-hated - change your browser out from under you!

    Or Zeta Reticulans...

    Dave

    p.s. Here's a screenshot of Previsat:

I thought about a satellite but at that hour~ 2-3am, they don't usually reflect do they? I normally see them after dusk and before dawn. Oh well, Z.R.s it is... Beam me up Barney!

Then this particular chain of satellites is high-up enough to be in sunlight at 3:00AM at your location.

    How's that? Think about it!

The Russians have launched a satalite said to be as bright as the full moon but luckily nothing has come of it hopefully it broke up in space, would have been a nightmare for astronomy! There's lots of things your flash could have been.probably something mundane although when I was a boy I did, along with the whole school yard, see a huge ring fly overhead in full daylight, still can't explain that one!

    Hi Kevan -

Unfortunately this satellite - named 'Mayak' and offically designated 2017-042F - went up and is currently orbiting the Earth. From many people giving reports on this thing, one thing looks certain: It's hype & fanfare was utterly overblown. Most report they can't even spot this piece of junk - which along with dozens of others were dumped in orbit from a cube Russia lofted - and is circling overhead, making an orbit in around 90-minutes.

The free satellite-tracking software-program I often recommend and link (and will here as well below) - Previsat - tracks this cosmic-joke quite well, if you wish to "try" to see yourself. Here's a screenshot of this:

    Mayak.png

Just download this image and scroll it for a better view of Previsat & 'Mayak.'

So if you ever wonder what that blinking thing is overhead, Previsat will give you a sporting-chance at identifying the UFO you, or friends, are freaking-out over! :D One small problem though - only about 40% of the satellites up there have an official designation available to us private-citizens. The other 60% are 'CLASSIFIED' and we're not supposed to see 'em!

So here's the official download site for Previsat - SourceForge - and it's the same site that the developers of Stellarium have chosen to use. It's safe and won't slip any garbage piggybacking into your machine. I always sweep things 2X for 'bugs' and have never found any from SourceForge. I can't say the same for the majority of others.

    And away we go:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/previsat/

It's got instructions with it. And it's only task you need to do is to remember to update it.

How about a nice Friday Horror-Story? This one's a pip! Not to long ago (during the days of the Space-Shuttle flights, McDonald's came withing ONE vote in the US Congress to being allowed to send-up a payload. It consisted of gigantic Mylar® Golden Arches to orbit Earth every 90-minutes in a high-orbit to remain huge, gold, and glowing across the nighttime sky. Forever. Or until someone skyjacked the Space-Shuttle and went & played Hans Solo and blew the bloody thing into the atmosphere and incinerated it!

    So have fun!

    Dave

Now that site is totally idiotic!! And it doesn't even give you a track on this cosmic-dud!

I cross-referenced Heaven's Above with Previsat and my TheSkyX Serious Edition - they all matched. It would figure this stupid hype for 'Rocket Bank' would work just as good as the "Brightest Fireball!" seems to. Perhaps I should complain to Vlad? I know - I'll call the White House and ask Donny to ask him! 1-202-456-1414.....

Q). "How do you separate Donny and Vlad?'

    A). "With a prybar."

Gee whiz! I sure hope they have a sense of humor.....Did you hear something.....

I think you have to download an app or something. There's an app for everything, apparently. That's a big mushroom!

Definition of a mushroom: something kept in the dark and fed on shite lol.

That mushrooms grow in the dark is a myth - they do need light - very little for some species - true - but some. Speaking of which - I should go check the tree-belt on my local green-line. I often find a good batch of Coprinus growing there after raining.

    Delicious!

I only really know about Liberty Caps lol.

‘Mushrooms can be grown in the dark or light as their energy does not come from the sun but from its growing medium.’ ~ op cit

To the Chinese; mushrooms appearing unlike plant or animal, are a symbol of eternal life and the supernatural.

"Liberty Caps" as in Psilocybe Semilanceata? As in Magic Mushrooms, eh? One variety thereof.

Nothing wrong with those - other than possible to get thrown in jail for them. I have a great deal of respect for these, and their use for seriously helping many people in many different applications. Slowly the research into such is being allowed again over here - through John Hopkins and Harvard (again).

However: If another Timothy Leary stands up today, would someone please do us all a favor - and shoot him? Please?

    Woof,

    Dave

Having a great interest in mycology - the science of fungus such as mushrooms - I went to the University of Washington - Seattle, the mushroom capitol of just about everywhere. And I wasn't disappointed! So many different varieties of mushrooms were in abundance in both the city area and across Puget Sound in what was basically a tropical-rainforest weather-wise. Any true mycophile (fungus-lover) should plan a visit.

The newest segment of devotees to these critters were young people looking for 'trips,' and this presented a problem: Armed with 'Urban Myth' rather than formal training, these folk were gobbling-down any "LBM" (Little Brown Mushroom) they came across. Bad idea - then and now! In the LBM-catagory there were 'shrooms of the genus Galerina. And the Galerina contained differing amounts of the same toxic molecules as is found in Amanita Phalloides (The Destroying Angel), a-amatoxin & b-amatoxin. These can cause the DDS - the Deadly Delayed Syndrome: One who ingests these will get sick to their stomach and vomit after 1/2 hour to 2 hours. But then they feel better, so they figure the effect is gone and all is well. BIG mistake.....

3 days or so, they feel ill again. Severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea occur, and severe pains. And continues. The bloody stool is composed of their internal organs, kidneys, liver, and finally and lastly - brain. Death is on the doorstep. The only chance, and then only if a small amount was ingested, a liver-transplant could save their lives.

So, please, people - if you are intending to pursue such, get some formal training and find an experienced mushroom-hunter to help you learn. And take this saying to heart:

There Are Old Mushroom-Hunters, And There Are Brave Mushroom-Hunters, But There Are No Old, Brave Mushroom-Hunters.

I think there are regular annual fatalities on the continent (France) of mushroom hunters. It's different here though, as the French will eat anything but the English won't eat anything growing wild or in woods as a rule. My freaky fungus days are long past, although Liberty Caps were unmistakable. I prefer my mushrooms from Waitrose now.

Who likes and dislikes mushrooms became a rather famous study in it's own right. Mycophiles & Mycophobes. 'Philes' is to love, and 'phobe' is to dislike or even hate. The French, German, Russian, and others, are lovers of the fungi. And the English are known to dislike these things - coining words like 'toadstools' and regarding them as negative entities in general.

Interesting that P. Semilanceata would remain so etched into your psyche - I would have to attribute this to your having had a very meaningful relationship with them for these otherwise rather non-descript little creatures. I, too, hold a great respect for the power of these rather forceful teachers! :D

    Ever read any A. Huxley?
