    Terrible shame that the university of Chicago is to close the Yerkes observatory in October. What will happen to the worlds biggest refractor, the Yerkes telescope?at the moment they're looking for some one to take it on,perhaps a wealthy oligarch,a modern day version of Yerkes himself? It'd be awful if the telescope ended up in a scrap yard.

    That won't happen. Someone will offer it a home - at least! It may lay dormant - but some one(s) will come along and refurbish it. This has happened many times with other "Great Telescopes!"

    Who knows? Maybe it'll end up being hauled down to Chile and dragged-up to a mountain-top in the Andes.

    The Yerkes's lenses where recently recoated.it'd be useful up a Chilean mountain. It can't be much above sea level where it is now plus you have the light pollution of towns nearby in the USA and Canada. I suppose when it was built it had to be in a reachable place long before air transportation became a common reality.
