One program nobody has mentioned is Cartes du Ciel,* or CdC. This is also freeware and excellent! I have it and use it daily for one task, as with others but one in particular everyday I find it's the best for: Seeking out asteroids. It makes it fun as well as easy.

    Here's the download site -

    * - Cartes du Ciel is French for Sky Maps.

CDC also runs well on Linux, although getting it to install and run wasn't straightforward and I had to get some help from the Ubuntu forums.

You can see it running here on my Lenovo G500 running Ubuntu.

I imagine that you now know how to do it, yes?

So when you programmed your autostar did you set it up as a GEM or an Alt AZ? Did you use the scale to set your incline for your latitude? That's the up and down one I think. Just pointed it North and did a 3-star alignment? How did you do it. Please explain it a little more.

Oh and by the way I am using Windows 7 on my main computer. I keep threatening to go to Linux because I have running as a dual boot on my other laptop.

I set it up as per the instructions that comes with, or available through their website. As a GEM. Set-up my lat. & long. as found by a Google of my location or such. It's been awhile, but it was step-by-step in the instructions. No problems that I recall.

People who have all these dire problems usually can't figure out how to enter numbers on a keyboard or pad. I don't suffer such a deficit and know my coordinates. I also know what 'GMT' means and how it translates to my time-zone here in the East-Coast. I am -5hr. from GMT during EST. Or -4hr. during DST (daylight-savings).

I am planning on getting the computer hooked to the laptop. I believe I have all the stuff to d it. I just want to get this thing up & running. If all I need to do is a three star alignment after reprogramming the handbox and setting my location. Then that's what I'll do. I triedto do am alignment early on and as I thought it would do it wanted to point at a star I couldn't see. Plus I am not all that familiar with star charts and what is what at this time but I want to lern these things. Talk about beginner that's me to a T.

I can figure things out as to how to run the handbox. It can't be that difficult.

    We all were beginners!

If a star isn't visible due to trees, rooftops, etc - just select another from the list it should give you. It's all in the manual. Available through the Meade website.

NEVER call their technical-support! I swear they hire those people from the locked-ward of some county-hospital! That's why you should always buy from a good dealer who provides excellent after-sales care. They're the one's who should deal with those nutbars!

    Lordy!

From what I've seen in help videos about LXD75/55 mounts if you get your elevation/declination set then set up the handbox according to your coordinance then all one would need to do is a 3 star alignment. Can you tell meif there is a set in programming the handbox thatt I shouldn't try to set up?

I got this Numbered time zone crap what is this anyway. I'm 6 from the Prime Meridian. If that means anything. Or should I just let it go as Zero?

I have the manual. I wad planning on going through the setup this weekend. I kinda wish I had someone close to help me a little. But from what you tell me you will from afar I hope. If I get to a place to where I am stumped I'll call on you.

It was years ago, so my memory is not better than your manual! :p

    With anything in science, here's a 'Golden-Rule:'

Don't proceed until you've gone over the task at hand as many times as needed until you understand exactly what you plan to do - and you fully understand why you are doing this. In other words: You understand the mechanism of what you hope to accomplish. This isn't a cookbook and a recipe for hard-boiled eggs.
