I found something kinda odd. I have some real weird things. The apps I.m talking about are compass apps I've downloaded and they are way off. I've had to rely on an old military compass to establish true north. I thought GPS was supposed to be so great.
The only one of the apps I have been able to rely on is Skeye Pro. It gets me BANG ON Polaris everytime.

I don't know how the compass apps actually work. I'm guessing it uses your IP address in some way. I'm not sure how different magnetic north, true north and Polaris actually are. I've ordered an Amici right angled adaptor for the polar scope on my EQ5.

I have a 20mm double cross hair EP that came with a Celestron SE6 that just got rid of. Man those things are a POS. Almost every time I took it out I had to collimate it first. It was a pain in the XXX to use too, The focuser was really touchy. I'm glad it's gone. I was never happy wit the views I got with it either. It was almost like someone took it apart and forgot to document where it was supposed to go back together.

The Amici RA viewer looks very interesting, Tell me how you like it after you use it. I have a Polar Scope Illuminator I got from 365 Astronomy over in England. It puts just a faint amount of light onto the reticule. It's just enough to see both the reticule cross- hairs and the reticule cross hairs are indistinguishable when you focus on Polaris. This illuminator solves that problem. The Amici RA might help too.

I'll have to check that illuminator out from 365Astronomy. As I live in England, that's convenient. I have an account with them. I can usually use mine without an illuminator though, it's just really difficult looking through the bloody thing without a ninety degree prism. lol

    Cool, I'm ordering it now.

That's why I posted it to you. I see you spell things a little different then we do here in the colonies, little joke there, 365 Astronomy sells to $62 US you probably can get it for less. When mine arrived the batteries were dead and I had to change them. One of them was swelled and it explode, almost hit me in the eye, my good eye too. The other eye I can't seem to get it to line up with the EP

    Hey Terry, Mak, etal -

Mars and the Moon are planning a slow-dance together tonight into the wee hours of the morning - depending on your location. So I've done a Stellarium star-chart showing 3:20ish AM of this at my location.

And I leave a Pdf. of this event from a EarthSky News article,

    Enjoy!

Don’t Miss the Moon and Mars on May 6.pdf

You might wish to download the star-chart to get a better size - or make your own. My original is suitable for framing!

The Pdf. is, of course, always downloadable quality.

You never guess what just happened? #@$%^&!!! My tripod broke right where you put pressure on the legs to hold it level. Crap now I have to hold the leg with a C-clamp.

Really Do you know what time the dancing starts? I have to look it up to see if it's going to happen here?

For my location, Mars rises at 1:21am on the 6th - later tonight. And the Moon rises at 1:09am.

They will be dancing together as they rise! So the show will begin for you, already in progress, as soon as they both rise!

    'Ta!

Moon should be rising about now for me. I've been out observing Jupiter and some deep sky with my ST80 though and I'm knackered now.

    OK to rave though lol.

    Welcome to the forums Terry,
One of the best Maksutov ever mass -produced was the Meade LX200 7". Truly a great optical instrument.
As usual Meade cut it out of production long before it was out of favor.
If you can find one on the market today you will be paying quite a bit for it.

    Dave....
Oh yes - we all have ST80's here - with 10:1 Dual-Focus GSO Crayfords on our inexpensive 80mm F/5 Achromats, which cost more than the telescopes themselves.

My eyeballs stop at f/7 :D

That right angle polar scope attachment doesn't appear to be able to work with my LXD55 mount unfortunately. I would buy one if I though it would work with my mount.

It has a 32mm lens cap on it and it fits tight. I could have gotten a bigger one to fit a little easier but I like a tight fit.

Well my cloud filter is broken so I won't be looking at Mars tonight.
