Practical Skywatching
Pros:Great color photos; Good advice for beginners; Great illustrated star chats.
Cons:May be difficult to find.
Comments:I would have to concur with one of my fellow reviewers - this book is worth seeking out. It is one of the most comprehensive and well presented books on the science of Astronomy that I've read in a long time. I managed to snag my copy at a book warehouse before they went out of business.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The book is divided into three major sections. The first section deals with the art of sky watching itself, with details on different sky phenomena and how to interpret and analyze them. There is also great advice on choosing and buying binocs, telescopes, and other accessories.
The next section deals with all of the well known constellations, with a brief history and description of each one. The sky charts shows, by the use of symbols, what can be seen with the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes of different sizes. I really liked this feature!
A "Starhopping Guide" encompasses the latter part of the book. These are selected sections of the sky that show how to navigate from one section of the sky to another, and a list of exciting targets to explore while you're passing through.
There are magnificent color pictures galore throughout the book, and a wealth of scientific information that will keep you occupied for some time to come. This is truly a book to add to your library and one to read often just for the sheer fun of it.Aug 4, 2007Practical Skywatching
Pros:Now out of print; can be found at a lower price; Excellent reading
Cons:Out of print
Comments:This unfortunately is a discontinued book that I think very highly of. It has six contributing authors and a very highly regarded consultant editor Dr. John O'Byrne. One of the contributing authors is David H. Levy and anyone who is knowledgeable in Astronomy books knows this author.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This book is divided into nine chapters, covering most anything to do with astronomy. It is a very "heavy" hardback book with almost 500 pages and has excellent photographs and articles that will last for some time. Published in 2002, it can be found and it is worthwhile looking for in used book stores and on the shelves of many current book stores. This is a book that will enhance anyone's library and hold its reading value for years.Sort by
