5.0 A Professional Theater Grade Planetarium Program Available for Free

      Pros:

Breathtaking rendition of night sky. Extra star catalogs allow the user to go deep. Free.

      Cons:

Not a chart creation program. Use Cartes for that.

      Comments:

This is not a cartographic program like Cartes du Ciel (Sky Charts) also reviewed on this site, but a realistic rendition of the night sky that can be used at public planetariums as well as on your home computer.

The sky rendition is truly beautiful. Various user options include constellation art, culture, atmosphere, ground, haze, and levels of light pollution, as well as projection and other options.

Stellarium installs with a default star catalog going down to magnitude 10.5 . Additional downloadable catalogs allow the magnitude limit down to 16.45 (according to the Wiki there is an additional catalog down to mag 18 but my version may not be the latest).

Stellarium, Cartes du Ciel, and Virtual Moon Atlas represent the three greatest examples of astronomical freeware available for download. Highly recommended.
