      Comments:

      Apogee 7.4mm - 22mm Zoom

The Apogee 7.4mm - 22mm Zoom is a compact Orthoscopic zoom eyepiece which performs well for its modest price. Being an ortho it has a narrow FOV but good detail and contrast. It is very small and light weight making it an excellent eyepiece for a small scope or for binocular viewing. It has good resolution and a fairly flat field. One drawback, beside a relatively tight eye relief, is the eyepiece does not hold focus when zooming. That's to say that when you change the 'focal length' by zooming in or out you have to readjust the focus.

This eyepiece is well made and the moving parts stay tight after being used. There are no internal reflection issues but the slightest of ghosting on very bright objects like the Moon. This eyepiece does exhibit some lateral color on bright objects like the Moon and Venus. It appears the larger the aperture scope, the more color. This eyepiece works very well in a Coronado PST. While on-axis performance is very good and off-axis performance is good, edge perform is poor especially in fast scopes.

This makes a good eyepiece for a Grab-N-Go scope. Another advantageous use for this eyepiece is to use it when you initially set-up to determine the best focal length for the seeing & transparency. Once you determine what will work best, you can switch to a fixed focal length eyepiece whether it's an Orthoscopic or wide field.
