A Classic Telescope The Cave Astrola 12.5" Model "D" Semi-transport
Pros:Strong heavy duty mount with 1.5"axis. Well designed mechanically as well as optically.
Cons:110VAC.you will have to find a frequency converter to vary the Right Ascension Axis.
Comments:I have one of these it was purchased in 09/1970 from Mr. Thomas R. Cave.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
A noted optician in his time and day. His reputation is still solid and is a much sought after mirror and or Caved equipped telescope from 6" to 16". This scope of mine weighs in around 275 pounds. Is 7.5 feet long and needs to be housed in an observatory. You will have to locate one second hand through the Astro Mart classifieds, http://www.astromart.com/classifieds/details.asp?classified_id=652214.
Needless to say buyer beware. This scope will bring the universe as well as the solar system to life. Color will be seen on planets, galaxies, as well as nebula's.
My scope is an F7 which can pull in both worlds planets as well as galaxies.
They come in f6-8. This scope I will say can be handled by one person and not necessarily for the experienced observer. I myself was 15 years old when I had mine. I STILL do! The scope has the ability to make the new multi-lens's eye pieces
to shine at their intended level. There is not enough to say about this work of art.
Coupled to a modern CCD camera and you can turn out large detailed observatory like photos. You will never grow tired of the scope. The Cost to obtain one varies on the telescope's condition. If it is like mine you will put down at least $5K. But that is just me and my price for it. In real life $2300 will get you a nice one that will probably need a little touch-up e.g. rust on the steel 1.5" axis (Dec.) and some work
on the tube. The mirror may need recoating Google it and use the top hits.
By all means this is a scope for all ages contrary to general advice I am living prove of that. This IS what telescopes are all about A CAVE 12.5" Newtonian Reflector!Sort by
