small internal prism causes vignetting, reduces FOV
Pros: Cons: Comments:This 45* correct image diagonal prism actually has a clean, sharp image. The problem is that becuase of the small prism (20mm trying to feed 32mm eyepieces), the outer 10% of the FOV is vignetted... that is darker than the other 90%.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
For that reason I decided to try the Williams Optics 45* diagonal. The vignetting disappeared, but the big surprise was that FOV increased about 10%. So, in comparison to the Williams, in the Celestron from 80%-90% is darker and vignetted, and from 90%-100% is completely cut out.
However, for the money, this does produce a very nice image. If you don't care about losing the last 10%, and having from 10%-20% a little darker, it does the job. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Feb 15, 2019Works as described for the right application
Pros: Cons: Comments:This does exactly as described. I did find, however, that it was les than ideal for astronomical use. I wanted a right view for public night and it worked just fine. Perhaps out of long habit, I felt the conventional 90 degree was more comfortable. For daytime use though, can't beat it.

Jun 30, 2007Low quality...only for daytime use.
Pros:Free with scope
Cons:Poor quality housing, bad coatings on occasion
Comments:This is a very low quality prism that is really suited for daytime use only. Some of these cheap 45-degree prisms even say that in the instructions...only good for daytime use.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
They do okay in daylight, but you can get better quality prisms, although you would have to pay for it. These cheap prisms usually come with a scope, so at least it is free. The fit and finish of the housing is also not that good, but again...it's usually free with a scope. Some of these also have poor coatings, but since they are mainly for daylight use, this is not much of a problem. I would not purchase one brand new...get a used one if you want to do daytime viewing.
Remember...don't buy one of these new! It's a waste of money.May 30, 2007Celestron 45° image erecting diagonal for 1.25”
Pros:Nicely made, Typical Celestron finish
Cons:Vignettes, seems to add CA in a small Achro, comparitively poor image quality
Comments:I received a Celestron 45° Erect Image Diagonal as part of a trade deal a few weeks ago. After using it a few time I understand why the other guy so readily threw it in as part of the trade. IMHO this diagonal is of about the same quality as the $50.00 Big Box Store telescope eyepieces. I don't think I've ever seen a diagonal that appears to mildly increase fringe in an 80mm Achromat before. With a wide angle eyepiece like a Nagler it slightly darkens the corners indicating it's not quite large enough to prevent vignetting. If you’re looking for something to occasionally use during the day to look at things through a small scope, this diagonal does have the advantage of being an erecting diagonal. It is basically well made. If it cost $20 or $25 I wouldn't be all that upset but at $40+ I certainly would not be enthralled with it's performance.
