Celestron CG-5 ASGT
Pros:Nexstar and all its features, 2inch legs, strong mount, autoguider port
Cons:Needs improvement to be a great mount. Noisy during slew, older hand controllers are not upgradeable
Comments:This is a great medium size mount for the price. It has a few flaws but after fixing them the mount is perfect! The mount can be used as is but with some mods you can have a super amazing mount for very little money. First is to change the thick grease to some good grease for your climate and adjust the worm gear mesh to reduce backlash. Fill or replace the legs to try to make the mount as heavy as possible (the less it will shake). The Nexstar remote is great with perfect gotos every time. For astrophotography, it is good - just don't load more than 20lbs. Balance the mount really well. I push my mount with 25lbs for photo and 37lbs visual use after my mods. The motors are noisy at slew but in tracking its silent.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesOct 26, 2007Celestron CG-5
Pros:Good value
Cons:It tracks quietly but Go-To's sound like a power drill
Comments:This is a good mount for the money. Once all the bolts are tightened and it's properly polar aligned and calibrated, it gives excellent Go-To's. It's a very stable platform for small scopes, but hasn't got an auto-guider port so it may not be ideal for astrophotography. Setup takes 5-10 minutes but that's to be expected with any EQ mount. EQ mounts in general are not as convenient to use for visual observation as fork mounts, but do provide the flexibility of allowing you to mount different scopes on one platform.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesApr 3, 2007Great mount
Pros:Steady and a quality performer
Cons:a bit noisy motors, (makes the dogs bark next door)
Comments:After a quick calibration (an easy learning curve) it performs flawlessly. Nice mount for the price! Well built and steady as a rock on the steel tripod legs. I added the polar eyepiece and wow, what a difference. I find that the altitude adjustment screw is poorly fitted because the computer shield interferes with the paddle on the screw at really low latitudes (less than 30 degrees and I'm in Florida 27 degrees!) I feel a modification coming on. Probably a rehousing of the computer! Other than that, I am really enjoying the mount. It is a really good steady mount holding a 10 inch newt with camera, finder and a photo refractor with counterweights (almost 38lbs)!
