Manufacturer Description

Color filters can be very useful for enhancing your views of the Moon and the planets. Depending on the atmospheric conditions, the telescope being used, the observer's experience, and the planet being observed or photographed, the advantages of color filters can be anywhere from subtle to dramatic. The right filter can make all the difference between seeing several small craters in the floor of Clavius on the Moon or not; seeing five or six swirls in Jupiter's belts or not; or seeing the inner Crepe Ring of Saturn or not.

GSO's 1.25" color/planetary filters are manufactured from the purest optical glass and are dyed-in-the-mass (not simply "color coated") for premium performance. They thread into the barrels of virtually any 1.25" telescope eyepiece. Each filter cell has a male and female 1.25" filter thread (M28.5x0.6) on opposite sides, so multiple filters can be stacked to achieve selective filtration of the visual color spectrum. The clear aperture is 25.6mm and each filter comes in a protective plastic storage case. Made in Taiwan.

The #15 Dark Yellow Filter is used to bring out Martian surface features and the polar ice caps. It darkens Maria, lightens orange-hued desert regions and sharpens boundaries of yellow dust clouds. Used on Jupiter and Saturn, it penetrates and darkens atmospheric currents containing low-hue blue tones and is useful for polar-region studies. It can also be used to enhance the orange and red features (bands and festoons) on these planets and for low-contrast cloud detail on Venus. For Uranus and Neptune the filter improves detail in larger telescopes (11" aperture and larger). For comets, it enhances tail definition.

Try it also on lunar surfaces as well as for daylight observation of Venus and Mercury.

      5.0 Great filter! Great Price!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

There's no need to waste your $$ on more expensive color/planetary filters; these GSO filters work very well. This #15 dark yellow is an excellent general purpose filter for lunar and planetary viewing in smaller refractors, as it doesn't have too much reduction.

I don't find it to be particularly useful on Saturn, but it's one of my favorites for viewing Jupiter in my 90mm F11 achromat. It's surprisingly good at correcting chromatic aberration, and artifacting sometimes caused in refractors under humid conditions due to Jupiter's brightness. It does a great job of enhancing contrast in the equatorial cloud bands and polar regions.

This #15 is an essential piece of kit for serious planetary observers who prefer to use refractors!

      5.0 Great add-on!

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Compact,Accurate,Strong Construction,Lightweight

      Cons:

      Comments:

I got this color filter to observe Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus when the warmer weather comes around and I can enjoy observing them again. I have other color filters by another manufacturer but the sets didn't include this one. I expect this filer to perform at least equal or better than my other set. GSO has very good quality for the price.

5.0 Great for the Sun with Baader Film

      Pros:

      No

      Cons:

      No

      Comments:

I bought this to use with the Baader Solar Filter also sold by Agena.

What it does is change the off-white, somewhat blueish view of the sun through Baader film into a view that is yellow-orange (amber?). This has a couple of benefits:
      - the eye has more sensitivity to detail in the yellow-green color spectrum
      - if an inexpensive refractor is used (i.e., an achromatic doublet), then a restricted color view will allow for better focusing and more detail, since there is no blurring from chromatic aberration
      - many people enjoy looking at a yellow-orange sun more than a blueish sun

This filter is inexpensive, fits my optical equipment (eyepieces, diagonals, Barlows), and provides a non-distorted view of the sun (noting that magnification is generally low during solar viewing because of turbulent air).
