Manufacturer Description

The world standard in telescope oculars, Meade Series 4000 eyepieces yield the widest possible fields of view, consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief - and yet with extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating 7-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, these sophisticated 4 to 8-element designs permit levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces of fewer elements. All Series 4000 eyepieces include a soft rubber eyeguard, custom fitted to each eyepiece with a bayonet mount. The eyeguards fold down for eyeglass wearers, and in fact the folded eyeguard shields eyeglasses from coming into contact with the metal eyepiece housings. Rubber grips are provided on all but the three shortest focal length Super Plossl eyepieces.

Designed to utilize the very latest in optical glass types, Meade 4-element Super Plossls are excellent general-purpose eyepieces. For observing hairline lunar and planetary detail, splitting close double stars, or for resolving faint nebulosity in deep-space, Meade Super Plossls optimize the performance of any telescope type, whether it is a f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, f/16 refractor, or f/4 reflector!

Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).

      5.0 Great company

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The item was in stock, shipped free (to Hawaii!), and shipped promptly. No issues at all. I purchased my Meade LX-90 from Agena last year and had similar results, except no free shipping. Not surprising with a 90+ pound item. I will be patronizing Agena in the future.

5.0 Very nice for the price!

      Pros:

      Top-notch lens elements
      Little refocusing necessary
      Smooth zoom action (camera-like)
      Solid construction
      Lens cap and storage container
      Minimal fringing on bright objects
      Great quality for the price

      Cons:

Stiff action only at first, but loosens up after a few uses
A bit heavier than the typical EP, keep this is mind for your setup

      Comments:

I was looking for an upgrade for my entry-level Orion Explorer II 7‑21mm Zoom and didn't want to break the bank. My buddy Dave in Vermont turned me on to the Meade as a quality zoom at a relatively low cost. I picked one up and was quite pleased! The lens elements are top notch (6 elements, 4 groups, fully multi-coated) with minimal fringing on very bright objects. Very little refocusing is necessary; it's almost like a camera zoom! Movement is stiff at first but loosens with a few uses. Solid and rugged construction. Comes with lens cap and protective storage container. Works like a charm in combination with my Maksutovs. Time to kill some planets now!

      4.0 Meade Super Plossl 40mm

      Pros:

      Nice multicoatings,Decent glass,Well Made

      Cons:

      Some floating blackouts,Smallish FOV,Heavy

      Comments:

I once owned the complete set of Meade series 4000 Super Plossl eyepieces, but I sold the set some time ago. However, I borrowed the 40mm SP eyepiece last night again from the person I sold the set to and used it in my 8" f/10 LX-90 SCT. The skies were very clear, with almost no clouds and there was no wind.

The 40mm is a decent eyepiece. Stars were nice and pinpoint and the background was a decent black. What I didn't like was the restrictive FOV and the blackouts. The AFOV is suppose to be around 43-deg but it may be somewhat smaller. The eyepiece weights a hefty 0.6 pounds and has 4 elements with an eye relief of 17mm which is not bad. If it weren't for the narrow FOV and the movable blackout effect, this would be a keeper. This a very big eyepiece for a 1.25" barrel and it does a very decent job.

      4.0 Meade Super Plossl 40mm

      Pros:

Well made; decent glass; nice multicoatings

      Cons:

Heavy; smallish FOV; floating blackouts that move with your eye.
