Manufacturer Description

Please Note: This is a rather heavy eyepiece which Meade just puts into a thin, chipboard cardboard box. The result is that almost all new 56mm Plossl eyepieces received from Meade have badly damaged (scraped/bent) packaging boxes. The eyepieces are absolutely brand new but please do not expect a prisitine looking package upon arrival for this item.

The world standard in telescope oculars, Meade Series 4000 eyepieces yield the widest possible fields of view, consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief - and yet with extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating 7-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, these sophisticated 4 to 8-element designs permit levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces of fewer elements. All Series 4000 eyepieces include a soft rubber eyeguard, custom fitted to each eyepiece with a bayonet mount. The eyeguards fold down for eyeglass wearers, and in fact the folded eyeguard shields eyeglasses from coming into contact with the metal eyepiece housings. Rubber grips are provided on all but the three shortest focal length Super Plossl eyepieces.

Designed to utilize the very latest in optical glass types, Meade 4-element Super Plossls are excellent general-purpose eyepieces. For observing hairline lunar and planetary detail, splitting close double stars, or for resolving faint nebulosity in deep-space, Meade Super Plossls optimize the performance of any telescope type, whether it is a f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, f/16 refractor, or f/4 reflector!

Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).

      5.0 Great finder eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I recently purchased a long focal length classical Cassegrain. I purchased this eyepiece to give me the maximum true field of view possible with a 2” focuser. Works great!

      5.0 Outstanding Low Power Eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This is a really wonderful low cost wide field eyepiece. Very immersive well-corrected views. Probably gives one of the widest fields of view for a 2" eyepiece. Surprisingly comfortable and easy eye placement, much better than similar eyepieces. It is on the heavy side though.

      5.0 Incredible Value

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The performance of this eyepiece far exceeds the cost. It’s the edge performance that distinguishes a good 2” eyepiece. The edge perfomance of the Meade 56mm is as near perfect as I have ever seen. Quality of construction is quite good. The only down side is its large size and weight. IT IS BIG.

      5.0 Large eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This eyepiece did exactly what I needed, a larger field of view using my 8" SCT. It is great for public star parties and viewing.

      5.0 Very pleasantly surprised

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I certainly did not expect such clarity in a $70 2” eyepiece (I bought it on sale) when I used it for the first time this afternoon in my 80mm achromatic refractor (ST80). Seriously, it was like no glass was there. This is my fifth 2” eyepiece, and this Meade 56mm Super Plossl is clearer than the other 4 - GSO 50mm SuperView, William Optics SWAN 40mm, and Orion Q70 32mm and 38mm. This is my first Meade product, and I’m impressed. Don’t get me wrong, those eyepieces are worth getting.

I heard how this eyepiece works well for SCTs and I bought this eyepiece for my recently purchased 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain. I haven’t used the eyepiece in my mak yet, but if the view in my ST80 is any indication, I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs in a 2700 FL, f/15 scope.

So far, I can certainly recommend this for an achromatic refractor. At 56mm focal length, this is probably the longest focal length eyepiece that I will own. With what I see so far, I’m happy if I use this only on my ST80 and 5” achro. For its price, it’s a steal at this performance with clarity and focus, almost to the edge. It’s well designed in matching the focal length, FOV, and clarity. Just wish it came with end caps, but Agena throws in a quality case, so I’m glad I purchased from them.

5.0 Agenaastro puts Super in the Meade Super Plossl

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The edge to edge performance of this 2" 56mm Meade Super Plossl is excellent. Used on a Zhumell 12" Dob, required that I leave about a half inch (0.5") of the barrel out. That is, not fully seating the eyepiece worked best. Perhaps the barrel unscrews, and there is an accessory barrel that can be used in its place. I probably should now shop for an "extender".

The eyepiece gathered so much light, that the more than half-full moon (and my local light pollution) was no competition for the star fields in Cassiopeia with the 56mm Meade Super Plossl.

I am giving this product a five star review, not entirely all due to the eyepiece. I'd like to shout out and say that the folks at Agenaastra are the best at providing the best all around deals available. They are pleasant, professional, and easy to work with.

      4.0 A good eyepiece

      Pros:

      Accurate,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

This is a good eyepiece all things considered. I mainly use it to align my telescope and it serves my purpose well in that regard. In my opinion, the field of view is average though, but it does not provide a tunnel like vision anyway. I use it to get the most brightness possible and it works fine, but it is a bit heavy.

      5.0 AWESOME EYEPIECE!

      Pros:

Sharp to the edge in SCT,Easy to Use,Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Heavy

      Comments:

My favourite eyepiece in my SCT! Provides me with the widest field of view for my telescope, the largest exit pupil, and sharpest, brightest image. Similar performance to my old Televue 55mm, which cost 3x more. I like the Meade 56mm better because it has a cooler tone and seems brighter! Incredible value for the price. Thanks Agena!!!

4.0 Meade Super Plossl 2 inch 56mm Eyepiece

      Pros:

Very good glass,All around well made

      Cons:

      Find a place to view,Heavy

      Comments:

Wow!! What a huge eyepiece. This is the biggest eyepiece I've ever looked into. When I re-checked out the Meade 40mm series 4000, my friend had the 56mm for me to look through. I thought my GSO 30mm 2" was a big eyepiece, and it is, but this 56mm Meade is one huge eyepiece. It has great eye relief and the hardest part was in finding a nice place to look into this eyepiece. I liked the "port hole" aspect and the view is nice if not almost super. The stats on this big beauty are: Weight at a hefty 1.4 pounds, eye relief at 21mm, and the FOV is 52 degrees.

I put this eyepiece into my WO diagonal and into my LX-90 f/10 SCT and didn't want to take it out. The black paint inside the barrel is excellent and its got a light green coating on the glass. Fully multi coated. Once you found a place to position your eye the views were worth the effort. It's amazing to me how good Meade is at the very large end of the eyepiece range. Both the 40mm and now the 56mm are really excellent eyepieces. I cheated when the Go-to was moving to another object and looked into the eyepiece and watched it move across the sky. Very nice. Slight sea-gulling at the end, but it to me was acceptable. I like this eyepiece.
