14mm Meade UWA 4K
Pros:Great edge performance, easy to use, immersive flat field, good eye relief.
Cons:Very heavy, lots of out travel, poor light transmission versus other premium eyepieces.
Comments:This is probably my favorite eyepiece even though I have several Pentax and Nagler eyepieces as well. The views are wonderfully immersive, though probably not as wide as advertised. I would say the AFOV is probably around 78-80 degrees, rather than the stated 84 degrees. Its definitely larger than the 70 degrees of a Pentax XW, but not quite the 82 degrees of a 17mm Nagler Type 4. However, I found its ease of use and eye placement to be better than the Nagler with possibly a slightly flatter field.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This is a very heavy eyepiece and probably as big as I'm willing to go. It also requires a lot of out travel in my 12 inch Dob (I often leave a quarter inch portion of the 2 inch skirt outside the focuser). I know many people have criticized this eyepiece for its poor coatings/light transmission, but I don't find it to be a big deal for most objects. If I need a bit more detail, I tend to switch to a 10mm Pentax XW.
As mentioned before, I typically use this eyepiece in my 12 inch, f5 Dob with a Paracorr at setting "1". I am very happy with its sharp, immersive views and good (14-16mm?) eye relief. Definitely recommended.Jan 8, 2007Meade series 4000 14mm Ultrawide
Pros:Large sharp flat FOV, its a space walk!!
Cons:Weighs a ton
Comments:Ok so I call it the hand grenade, thats about the size of this thing, and yeh it packs about as much ammo as one. I have a number of eyepieces, but this Meade 14mm Ultrawide is one of my most used eyepieces in my 22.5" dob and even my 12" SCT. Why, well its pretty simple, the port hole view, and the sharp flat field of stars right to the edge. You feel as if you are floating in space!! With my Antares 812GP scope I get 60 power and almost 1.25 degree FOV. That FOV with pinpoint stars all across. Through the 22.5" dob, M13 is dazzling, resolved to the core with this eyepiece, with enough dark sky around to make the image as if I was looking at it from a space ship. Meade did real good on this one.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
PS: Its smaller brother the 8.8mm series 4000 Ultrawide is my most used high power eyepiece in my scopes. It doesn't get any better then this combo.Sort by
