Orion ST120 f5 OTA
Pros:Excellent cost to performance ratio in a wide-field achromat.
Cons:Fast achromat will result in some CA issues, and stock focuser isn't the best.
Comments:The ST120 is an excellent low cost wide-field refractor that combines portability with enough aperture to make chasing DSOs fun. It is also a decent planetary and lunar scope, though CA can be a problem for some. Personally I recommend replacing the stock R&P focuser (I installed a GSO dual-speed crayford) and the straight-thru finder (installed a GSO 8X50 RACI finder). Overall I have been very pleased with it's performance. I primarily observe DSOs, and from a darker site, I have had a lot of fun chasing them with this scope. Being a fast scope, it doesn't handle higher powers well, but I tend to observe under 100x with all of my scopes most of the time while DSO hunting anyway. All in all, it makes a great grab-n-go scope.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesJan 5, 2010120ST f/5
Pros:Lightweight for its size, wide field views, PRICE!!
Cons:Some false color, R&P focuser
Comments:This is a great wide field telescope. If you love scanning the milky way with wide angle eyepieces this is the telescope for you. This is a great telescope to see those faint fuzzies, but it does lack on solar system objects because of some false color and the short focal length. I use this telescope for narrow band imaging and for that it's better than the best small Apo telescopes that cost double the price! The one bad thing is the R&P focuser. I changed it to a dual speed crayford unit and what a difference it made - now this OTA is perfect. And the false color can be fixed by filter. A great scope for the price

Pros:Excellent on DSO's and clusters
Cons:When used as intended, no real cons
Comments:This is a very good low power wide field scope. Not too bad to move around and the mount and drive work very well. Nice and sturdy for the payload it holds.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I use a 2 inch diagonal and 2 inch low power eyepieces and I am very pleased. It puts up a view about as good as my 6 inch reflector on DSO's & clusters. If you have a good view of the milky way, this is a scope you will enjoy spending some time with. Not really made for solar system work but I had to take a peek. You could compare it to using some binocs, too fast for high power views.Jan 8, 2007What An Excellent Telescope!!
Pros:Light weight, portable, wide field views and very versatile. Excellent price point.
Cons:Limited Chromatic Aberration
Comments:When wide Rich-Field views are your desire you will really like this telescope! The Orion 120ST (short tube) F/5 is an excellent grab-n-go telescope allowing you to enjoy gorgeous planetary, deep sky and cluster views. There is some chromatic effect typically associated with achromatic telescopes but this is easily nullified with a minus violet filter.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The construction is solid and the short tube is light weight and very portable. I've even used one of these scopes as a finder scope on my big dob providing great refractor views along with the light gathering abilities of a big reflector.
I recommend this scope to anyone looking for an easily setup and transportable fast telescope. It's 600mm focal length also lends itself well to CCD imaging.Sort by
