Great magazine...wherever you are!
Pros:Good coverage of all things astronomical; Reliable source of information
Cons:A bit pricey
Comments:Most of us are familiar with Sky and Telescope. It has evolved into what is, "hands down", probably the best known amateur astronomy magazine in the world. Even in professional astronomy circles, it it the magazine of choice for getting the latest scientific information out to the general public in the area of astronomy and astrophysics. Though in the last few decades several other competitors have come along (and a few have gone), Sky and Telescope still remains at the top.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The one area where it really stands out and fills a gaping hole is in the Southern Hemisphere. Other publications merely touch on or mention the Southern skies in their articles and photos, but Sky and Telescope publishes a version of the magazine for Southern observers. When I was visiting in Australia, I found that Sky and Telescope (Southern Hemisphere edition) was my primary source of information for keeping up on the local events, work of astronomers in the Southern Hemisphere, and advertisements for those items available there. No other single publication in the world has as good a coverage of things astronomical covering things in both hemispheres!Nov 16, 2007Sky and Telescope
Pros:Widely available; Current and up to date info; Monthly star charts, equipment reviews, etc.
Cons:Somewhat pricey.
Comments:From its humble serendipitous beginnings, Sky and Telescope magazine has evolved into major powerhouse in the pursuit of all things astronomical. There is probably no one who has a interest in astronomy that has not read an article, seen an illustration or photo, scanned a star chart, or read an equipment review that has appeared in this wonderful magazine.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Around 1940, the managing editors of The Sky magazine, which would later evolve into the magazine we know today as Sky and Telescope, stated that part of their goal for the magazine was: "....try to make the magazine meet the needs of amateur astronomy, so that amateur astronomers will come to regard it as essential to their pursuit, and professionals to consider it a worthwhile medium in which to bring their work before the public."
I think that Sky and Telescope has accomplished these goals and is still a viable and valuable resource for the astronomy community.Sort by
