      2.0 Teleskop Service 20mm Plössl

      Pros:

      > Well made
      > Good basic Plössl

      Cons:

      > No blackened Filter Threads
      > Spherical Aberration & Pin Cushion distortion causes poor edge sharpness.

      Comments:

      May 2007 update

It appear Teleskop Service has a 'new' version of their Plossl with a slightly higher price of 35.00 Euro. These TS Plossl have a much nicer finish, the TS logo on them, and new barrel with a recessed groove. Unfortuantely I did not have a chance to try these and can not comment on their performance.

The Teleskop Service 20mm Plössl has a sharp and crisp AFOV on-axis of about 30°. While the total AFOV for the eyepiece is approximately 45°, the outer 20% of the FOV suffers from Sherical Aberration. Contrast and detail are good on-axis like most good Plössl eyepieces. In addition to the Spherical Aberration in this eyepiece, there is minor 'pin cushion' distortion which affects the edge sharpness even more than the shorter focal lengths. While the sherical aberration is typical of the standard Plössl design, the 'Pin Cushion' distortion is not. This is a decent inexpensive Plössl eyepiece, if you live in Europe. If you live elsewhere, definitely look for a standard Meade or Celestron Plössl. While the Teleskop Service Plössl is a decent eyepiece it's nothing special and the minor 'Pin Cushion' distortion knocks it out of contention with the Meade & Celestron Plössl for the same price.

(I'm marking this as "Not Recommended" only for those where other comparible Plössl eyepiece are more readily available.)
